Hiking Koh Tao gives you the freedom to discover the island at your own pace and the chance to see Koh Tao in a unique way. These 5 best Koh Tao hiking trails take you from the towns of Sairee, Mae Haad, and Chalok Baan Kao.
You are hiking to Koh Tao’s most remote and challenging Grape Viewpoint (named and first publicised by Koh Tao Complete Guide in 2017). From this point, which is almost at the northern tip of Koh Tao, you will witness the beauty of Koh Nang Yuan from a very close angle. Though the highlight isn’t just the destination, it is also the trail to it. Starting from a very steep deserted concrete road in North Sairee, you will hike across the most abundant dry evergreen forest of Koh Tao, where decorated with giant alocasia, Platycerium ferns and wild bananas and accompanied by the song of wild cicadas. On the way back from Grape Viewpoint, if you’re still feeling energetic, hit one of the pay-to-visit viewpoints that offer a panoramic view of Sairee Beach.

This is a 2.8 km hike that will take approximately 1 1⁄4 hours. The road to Laem Thian (A) is mainly a washed-away dirt track. As you are hiking, look around, you may see a Nicobar pigeon on the ground or a green imperial pigeon in the trees. About 700 m before you get to Laem Thian, there is a small trail on the left near a big mango tree (B), which goes to Mao Bay (C). This 300 m trail becomes narrow and bushy while going downhill to the bay. There is a waterway with large boulders and a huge Pandanus tectorius tree just before you arrive. Mao Bay is one of a few secluded places where no buildings or people are staying.
