The first accommodation on Koh Tao was established in 1984.
It was very basic, just small simple huts, no fan, communal shower room and toilet, and cost 30 Baht per night.
Today, things couldn’t be more different. Koh Tao now offers a wide choice of places to stay from simple wooden beach bungalows in secluded bays to budget dorm hostels in town centre to luxury pool villas with private beach costing over 10,000 Baht per night. Services and therefore what to expect vary. Many places are friendly family-run businesses, with the owner and family members taking care of the cooking, cleaning, gardening, reception, restaurant, and everything else themselves. Other resorts, have staff with professional management teams.
It is also worth noting that some of the more remote locations have limited electricity.
