Koh Tao Nature, Flora and Fauna

Flora on Koh Tao

Koh Tao nature forest consists of 4 main types:

  1. Dry evergreen forest
  2. The most common flora of Koh Tao nature is seen covering the mountain tops.

  3. Mixed deciduous forest
  4. This type of forest is found on the foothills in the northeast of Koh Tao and is mainly scrub and small trees which shed their leaves during the dry season.

  5. Dry evergreen forest with the ‘Koi Naam’ as a distinguished tree
  6. Found on the hills in the southeast of Koh Tao, the Koi Naam (Streblus ilicifolius) is a small tree with a straight trunk. Its leaves are dark green in colour and thick and glossy with an edge of sharp thorns.

  7. Beach Forest
  8. Most of the trees are salt-tolerant plants (Halophytes) and resistant to drought and dehydration. They normally have bent trunks and short branches with thick and hard leaves. An example is Pemphis Acidula and the tropical almond.

Dipterocarpus Alatus

This tropical forest tree is easy to spot as they are the tallest one on Koh Tao. Some may be as high as 50 metres. On Koh Tao, the tree is home to the biggest bird here, the White-bellied sea eagle. The fruit is small and round with two long wings enabling it to fly away.

Marine Fauna and Flora

The marine fauna and flora around Koh Tao form a natural aquarium for snorkelers and divers. Vibrant species such as angelfish, butterflyfish, and stingrays thrive on the reefs. Hard corals, including table coral, staghorn coral, mosaic coral, and mushroom coral, dominate these waters. Koh Tao offers divers an ideal opportunity to observe the intricate relationships within the marine ecosystem.
