Sairee Beach is the longest (1.85 km) and most popular free beach on Koh Tao, located on the island’s west coast. It features a bustling atmosphere with hotels, dive schools, restaurants, bars, shops, and vibrant nightlife. Perfect for families and solo travellers alike, Sairee Beach is a great place to relax, enjoy a refreshing drink, and take in spectacular sunset views.

As the third largest beach on Koh Tao, Chalok Baan Kao Bay is a peaceful southern town featuring hotels, restaurants, clinics, and convenience shops. The shallow, gently sloping water makes it perfect for families, while strong swimmers can snorkel with green turtles near Freedom Beach II. It offers beautiful views of neighboring islands and the iconic Buddha Rock.

Mae Haad Bay is Koh Tao’s main port town, blending a local Thai lifestyle with essential services like government offices and a hospital. It is a great shopping hub for souvenirs, dive gear, beachwear, and fresh local produce. Snorkelers can explore a 1962 shipwreck at the south end of the bay, which offers a chance to see marine life like fusiliers and rays.

Located on Koh Tao’s east coast, Tanote Bay features a wide, free-access beach ideal for sunrise views and sunbathing. Lush hills and large boulders frame the bay, including a famous rock-jumping formation in the middle. Snorkeling is exceptional just a few steps into the water, with vibrant coral and large fish, particularly around the Four Rocks shallow dive site.

Laem Thian is a secluded cape on the east coast, untouched since its only hotel closed in 2011. With a rocky outcrop and a free beach, it offers excellent snorkeling and the chance to see humphead parrotfish and blacktip reef sharks. Reachable only on foot, the one-hour trail from Sairee Beach makes it one of the island’s best hikes and a peaceful escape.

Sai Nuan Beach Two, also known as Banana Rock, has white sand and shallow water. Its protected bays are excellent for snorkeling, especially around the boulders, where visitors may spot orange-spine unicornfish, barracuda, and green turtles. Lighthouse Bay, originally named Gluay Teun Bay (meaning wild banana bay), is a remote snorkeling gem on the north coast. It is reached via a hiking trail that leads down to the free-access beach and up to the lighthouse tower itself.
